Maryland Cottage Food Businesses

  • Make $50,000 or less per year

  • Individually packaged with a label containing all ingredients, potential allergens (milk, soy, wheat, egg, etc.), the address of the business, or the MDFC-issued ID number, net weight of the product.

  • A printed statement in 10-point type or larger, in a color that clearly contrasts the label's background: “Made by a cottage food business that is not subject to Maryland's food safety regulations.”

Food Sampling & Sales Permit

The following vendors require a Farmer’s Market Vendor License:

  • Non-cottage food businesses selling consumable goods

  • Food trucks (if no mobile unit license has already been issued)

  • All beverage vendors

The following vendors need a Farmer’s Market Sampling License:

  • Any non-cottage food vendor giving out samples (includING farmers and producers!)

*Cottage-food vendors are exempt from the sampling license, HOWEVER, samples MUST BE PACKAGED AT HOME. SAMPLES MAY NOT BE PACKAGED ON-SITE.
